KIM HENENBERG

A solo exhibition at Brunswick Temporary in 2021.

Artist Statement

When I first conceived this piece I was 11 years old, know that I’m older now. I’ve always been good with animals, people not so much. I learned early on that you have to adjust your expectations and as a keen watcher of nature documentaries I noticed tools that animals use that I could use in interactions with ever changing environments that I would have to navigate in this concrete jungle..jungle! Now as I’m older and my older body is hopelessly malfunctioning I find myself thinking back wistfully to that young boy child and his blissfully ignorant naps of leisure among the leaves of the gum trees before he was forced to submit to ridiculous trials by fire into manhood through the prisms of a Shivite cult obsessed with creative destruction that involved coming up with creative and fun ways of destroying one’s physical body to achieve a mentally divine state of yoga consciousness. I’d like to be able to say there wasn’t a guide book but I’d be lying it was written down, very jargon heavy and I was probably to stoned to read it, bit of horse before the cart action. But anywho good times Bom Shankar and all that. And with that I have given you a thread that you may sew a story with. Working title is - when I was a child, looking at myself as a child through the lens of time and space.

Would you like to lie in a tepid body of water with me, or perhaps place your elbows in ice cold water while I sing a little song? If this sounds like you or someone like you might like to do you like me? If that sounds like you sounding out a better offer you’ll fine no offer better than this offer of free speed, all above board and totally legal and definitely not connected to any bikey, bikey clubs where the men are large and the feelings are mutual. Anyway if you’d like to sit in a bath with me, bathing is not garenteeeed. Landfish out.
